German theater around the world

Paris (IMH) – Would you have known? In Kazakhstan exists a German theater with its own building! There are over 200 German-speaking theater groups in France! New groups have recently emerged in California and the Canadian capital Ottawa. Even in Portugal, Paraguay, Greece and Australia people act in German.

The variety of German-language theaters all over the world is very large. In total, there are several hundred drama groups outside of Germany, Austria and Switzerland that create performances in Goethe’s mother tongue. The actors are often volunteers, but there are also professional actors. Most groups can be found in Italy, France and Belgium. Visitors to the performances are Germans, Austrians and Swiss abroad or foreign students of German language courses. German belongs to the most widely spoken and learned languages internationally.

The German-speaking theater groups abroad are listed for the first time in a directory by Björn Akstinat. It was published by IMH-Verlag. The directory is a MUST for all passionate theatergoers, theater makers, actors, linguists and experts who deal with the culture of German minorities around the world. As an extra bonus, all Yiddish theaters worldwide are listed at the end of the new directory.
